Winkler City Council met on July 11. At this meeting, they received a petition (rather, several different petitions) with signatures from businesses in Winkler and the Pembina Valley, most of which are served by South Central Regional Library. These businesses have requested that their tax dollars not be used to fund South Central Regional Library because they don't understand that comprehensive sex education is not the same thing as child sexual abuse material.
Because the petition was not an official petition, Council did not discuss it.
We do think it's important, though, that you know who has signed it.
To view the official source document, click here. It's listed under "4.3. Business Petition".
It was also received and posted by the Town of Altona, along with a copy of the email indicating that the person who submitted the letter specifically stated "[p]lease review and accept it as public correspondence for the board and therefore make it available to the public for transparency reasons." You can view this source here. It's under "10.1 Letter regarding South Central Regional Library".
We've embedded both agendas below.
We encourage you to cross reference the original document for transparency's sake, but we've got a spreadsheet that you can view and sort as you wish. We also have Sample Letters for you to send to any businesses or franchises to clarify responses.
Please note, we have removed individual addresses in favour of town names for both privacy and ease of use sake. We have done our very best transferring this information, but we aren't perfect - please dm us on Instagram or Facebook to let us know if we've made a mistake! You can view the source document (above) to cross reference.
If you're on this list and signed the petition under duress, or it was signed by an employee and you are opposed to it being signed, please get in touch with us and we'll make note of it.
Use these letters to reach out to businesses who are on the list, or inform larger franchises of the behaviour of their franchisees. Feel free to make a copy and edit as you see fit.
